MY PURPOSE

“We are here to awaken from our illusion of separateness”
Thich Nhat Hanh

In an era where our mechanistic systems further fragment our connections to nature, each other, and to ourselves, my art seeks to transcend these divisions and behave as an integrator and catalyst for systemic transformation, so I can contribute in my small part, to the evolution of our nature and all nature, personally, socially, ecologically and universally. This approach challenges the illusion of separateness, inviting viewers ro experience a sense of the consequences of fragmentation as well as the beauty and unity of wholeness. To help facilitate the awakening to the intrinsic knowledge that we are all interconnected.

At its very core, my creative process aims to observe and assimilate fragments into a whole, to open to new possibilities and harmonise the unknown and the known; to promote the non duality of our existence. Giving equal credence to universal wisdom, intuition, imagination and insight, mine is a practice that draws on philosophy, science, art, nature and energy as equal partners in a dynamic and infinitely unfolding and enfolding of energetic emissions - whether through thought, feeling, action or non action.

My creative process therefore leans heavily on the cultivation of various independent practices, which are allowed to then coalesce and synthesise either organically or purposefully into my work.

A critical, foundational aspect of my creative process is a meditative one - the implicit and explicit knowledge that we are all made of energy and that we are, collectively, consciousness. This helps me both shift my brain into a more creative state ehilst also clearing a channel for ‘spontaneous’ insights and imagery to emerge.

My creative work is both intellectually and experientially sourced, so I try and keep up to date with latest ideas and talks around non duality, quantum mechanics and the science of mind and consciousness. I walk and swim in nature and forage and photograph the animate and inanimate for inspiration. I observe the wonders of the world and to learn deeply from the wisdom of nature and the beauty it surrounds us with.

I draw from my finely honed skills and expertise as a researcher and analyst, and an human and business insights practitioner of over 30 years, as well as my years as a corporate futures thinker and strategist, and my regenerative frameworks and solutions that I have designed as a lens through which to build solutions for the wellbeing of people and the ecosystems that sustain us.

My personal sessions and classes and corporate workshops I give to clients also serves as my research to continually evolve and build on my own practice.

Mostly delightfully, I seem to delve repeatedly into my vivid imagination, anchored by a life long love of the mystical, science fiction, literature, art and music.

The culmination of these streams is borne out in my studio, where I aim to create a space for spiritual and energetic connection, to channel my individual uniqueness and our collective conscious through creative work, whilst diminishing the fear of living in the seen world.

My approach to art making integrates all of these aspects, and allows my work to emerge organically and openly through journalling, layering, painting over, peeling back and scraping through, and building - a constant cycle of creation and destruction, of building and repairing of fragments until the work calls itself whole. I leave works sometimes for weeks or months until we are ready to evolve from the transactional to a deeper energetic connection of resolution and wholeness.

I currently work primarily with paint, ink, and pastels and collage on paper, board and canvas to represent and explore the quality and tone of fragmented dimensions of our selves and our seen and unseen worlds. I leave painted canvases sometimes for weeks or months until we are ready to evolve from the transactional to a deeper energetic connection of resolution and wholeness.

My Work

Series 1 : The Healing of Persephone

Inspiration

The myth of Persephone is one that captured my imagination throughout my childhood. The abduction of Demeter’s daughter, torn from the bright, abundant, flowering earth to dwell in darkness in the underworld, transformed not just her own psychology (and mine!) but also her mother’s & Hades’, and this had an irrevocable and lasting impact on the nature of the physical world too.

In darkness there is lightness of spirit, in shadow there is the truth of our deepest natures. “As above, so below; as below, so above.” The infinite cycle of birth, death and rebirth is at the very heart of all of (our) nature. If we learn to embrace and believe in the truth of ourselves, our shadow as well as our light, we can always find beauty, even in the darkness.

Series : Koyaanisqatsi

Inspiration

Inspired by Koyaanisqatsi - the 1982 experimental film by Godfrey Reggio and famously scored by Philip Glass, which is itself inspired by the Hopi word for “Life Out of Balance”.

We are living in the age of the Anthropocene - an age where human decisions and activity have shaped our environment to the point of potentially no return. Alarming signals of climate change, environmental and resource pressures, technological change and influence -  in confluence with global political change  and major socio demographic shifts -  will continue to have unprecedented and uncertain ramifications on how humans will be living and working, now and into the next decade and beyond.  (Link to paper)

As humans we are in a uniquely powerful place to more proactively and positively shape the change, to create more balance and harmony, from the inside out.
